Mushroom hunting in an undisclosed woods in Surrey.

Making the most of the short while before the sunset, I kept walking, hardly taking any rest.

It turned out to be some 12 miles.

Pine wood.

The forest predominantly consists of Pine and some other coniferous trees.

Trees have been planted well and evenly spaced with their branches trimmed neatly, and the ground was well-broomed.

A pretty sight but maybe not exactly promising in terms of foraging…

Heathland could be peeped through between the Pine trees.

This wood was absolutely infested with dogs and their owners.

They would jump on you, bark at you, disturb your lunch break, or whatever they wished to do.

You, on the other hand, have no option but meekly accept them.

To this day, I neither liked nor disliked them, but enough is enough to the beasts and their owners with no manners now… Yes, I dislike them.

I am a confirmed cat person.

Some Beech trees were found around a pond, which is rare to this forest.

On dead trees, a lot of different kinds of fungi were grown.

This is one of them.

What could it be?

Flourishing on a large dead Beech tree was this mushroom!

It looks like an Oyster Mushroom, but it differs with its slimy and olivaceous cap.

After referring to a number of sources online, I concluded that it is the Olive Oystering aka. Mukitake or Late Fall Oyster Mushroom.

I felt quite lucky to have encountered it for it apparently is a rare species to be found on the British Isles.

As far as I know, there are no deadly poisonous look-alikes of this kind, so I took a chance, taking it home to eat.

Mukitake is apparently not as highly a regarded edible as in Japan here in Europe, as some guidebooks even classify it as inedible.

On top of that, a German researcher has published his research on this species saying that it has carcinogen, which does not help its reputation.

Later, it is said by the same man that this finding has been disproved.

I trimmed the edge of the cap of one of them, for it is said to be soft enough to eat.
