A day off in early winter, I went mushroom picking in Surrey.

The daytime in this quarter of the world is surprisingly short.

I could hardly afford the time to stop and eat, drink or rest but just kept walking in my race against the setting sun.

Shortly after getting into the forest,

I bumped into a couple who were enthusiastically examining some magnificent mushrooms growing on the ground.

"What did you find?", I asked when they answered with a big smile on their face

"We think we have found the Prince!’"

From then on, what awaited me was a long, fruitless wander.

It seems like I was at an unfortunate in-between slot-

when the autumn mushrooms are over and the winter species are yet to flourish.

Not only edible kinds but microbes in general appeared to be absent.

Or were they hiding under the thick carpet of leaf litter?

It was rather physically and mentally exhausting, although this is the ‘nature’ of the game.

Hope Nature will bless me with its fruits the next time!

Out of the station, I walked on the grassland towards the hilltop along the railway.

After a long wander I finally found these Trooping Funnel, which already were way past their best.

They had turned brown with dull black spots with old age.

Wood Ears!

Days are short in the winter here.

Out of concern for early sunset, I kept walking, hardly taking any rest nor time for food and hydration.

How could there be no sign of any fungus, let alone edibles…

I would not mind physical exhaustion, as long as my soul is satisfied.

This, on the other hand, was such a fruitless search.

After a lengthy soul destroying wander, I had my first ever encounter with these little Wood Ears!

Stump Puffball

Finally, I found the Honey Fungus aka the Naratake Mushroom...

or its remains.

I completely missed the season....

Safely returned to the starting point.

Puffballs.

The Puffballs that I picked earlier.

All of them were fried and eaten except for three or so whose cross section were totally yellow when cut to examine.

Marshmallow like, so to speak, or something even more slimy flesh, was not the most appetising quite honestly.

I would not like to eat it any more.

The Wood Ears, on the other hand, were enjoyed for their pleasant crunchiness, although it is tasteless and scentless.

I knew that it could not go wrong, but it clearly lived up to my expectations.
