.............

Voodoo Chile (Slight Return),
Deep PurpleのSmoke on the Water, Black Night,
Cream の
Sunshine of Your Love…

A personal view on Rock history.

First off, I am not a music critic or historian.

Please be reminded that most of the information presented here is derived straight off the internet and my rusty memories from the past.

........

It would be safe to say that the birth of Rock was brought with the invention of the electric guitar and they progressed hand in hand with each other as the development of the guitar amplifier and other sound effect equipment around it.

The guitar, the instrument which merely kept the rhythm in popular music, emerged as a main feature when it was enabled to produce a loud, flashy sound.

It is said that it is impossible to point at one individual who was responsible for the birth of Rock.

However, the great Chuck Berry has been said to be the main pioneering figure.※1

Quite recently I got to know that there was a person who played Rock prior to Berry in the late 40’s.

The 1949 debut single of this certain person named Goree Carter when he was just 18 year old, was said by many to be the world’s first ever Rock n Roll record.

The uplifting uptempo song with a loud distorted guitar riff is without a doubt, Rock n Roll to my ears.※2

Prior to this in 1948, Muddy Waters※3, the father of Chicago Blues, released a single titled ‘Feel Like Going Home’ w/w ‘I Can’t Be Satisfied’, where he shows off distorted electric guitar riffs.

Those people in the late 40’s in my opinion were the origin of Rock music.

Hard Rock was created years later by applying heavily distorted guitar thanks to the development of amplifiers and sound effects around it, featuring flamboyant guitar riffs and solos, I think.※4

It is synonymous with the development of electronic equipment in the late 60’s.

As well as the origin of Rock ‘n’ Roll, one cannot name one individual or band as the father of Hard Rock.

However, the closest figure must be Jimi Hendrix.

‘Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)’ on the album ‘Electric Ladyland’ was something no one ever heard before; the extremely loud, distorted guitar riff※5※7 using the Wah-Wah Pedal※6; raw sound of feedback※8; wild strumming※9 and slide glissando※10… one can find all the essences in Hard Rock in this one masterpiece.

This song blew the mind of every musician of his contemporary and revolutionized the music scene for good.

Hendrix was not appreciated enough in his native America, so he moved to the UK in quest of worldwide recognition.

There he was introduced to the Marshall Amp Shop※11, a new aspiring guitar amp maker who was thriving their way to the world’s best as they worked closely with British Rock Giants such as The Who, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.

The amp maker had played an indispensable part in the birth and development of Jimi’s music and British Rock and eventually Hard Rock in general.

For instance, Deep Purple started off their career as a Psychedelic Rock band, when The Who※12 was the leader of the Mod scene, was inspired by this movement and turned pioneers of Hard Rock.

Another important change was the birth of ‘Guitar Hero’. Prior to Hard Rock, the vocalist was almost always the sole point of attention in a band.

Newly created deafening sound effects enabled the player to be the centre of attention since then.

Previously unthinkable phenomenon followed- the emergence of the songs which were remembered almost solely by the guitar riffs, not by the chorus parts.

‘Voodoo Chile Slight Return’,
‘Smoke on the Water’ and  ‘Black Night’ by Deep Purple
and ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ by Cream …

I presume most people remember the signature guitar riffs of these songs, not  the singing bits so much.

Many British Rock bands experimented with Hard Rock in the era, such as 1968 Beatles song ‘Helter Skelter’, which was composed in the attempt of making it ‘heavier than The Who’. This is remembered as the ‘heaviest song’ of the band.

Rock Awhile

Goree Carter

Johnny Burnette Trio

Tiny Bradshaw、

Johnny Burnette Trio,

Wikipedia

1951 was the year when ‘Train Kept A-Rollin’ by Tiny Bradshaw was released, which was to be covered by numerous bands to be a Rock standard.

This original version is a fantastically uplifting and fast-paced tune, although it is not Rock.

It was The Johnny Burnette Trio who transformed the song into a guitar riff driven bluesy Rock n Roll.

Ever since most  bands covered this version of the song instead.

There have been many cover versions, three of which bellow have been the best amongst of all, in my opinion;

The original by Tiny Bradshaw,

Johnny Burnette Trio,

And Motorhead’s version.

By the way, the origins of the term Rock n Roll has still been debated.

The influence from Surf Music and its innovator Dick Dale was another phenomenon that should not be underestimated.

Dale’s music flourished in sync with the progression of the amp maker Fender.

His father was from Lebanon, where his Middle Eastern influence in music was most likely derived from.

One can argue that the dawn of Surf Music was the experimental field of the collaboration of the Stratocaster and its sound effects by Fender and the player Dick Dale.

Needless to say the fruit of the experiment has been crystallized in the 1962 masterpiece ‘Misirlou’.

Mitch Michell, later to be the drummer of Jimi Hendrix Experience, was working at the Marshall amp shop.

It started off as a drum shop, to later be the world’s most famous guitar amp shop.

Destined was not only the encounter with the best drummer and amp in a foreign land, but his middle name, which happened to be ‘Marshall’ itself.

The band’s guitarist Pete Townshend put up a pile of Marshall amps to create what was called ‘Marshall Wall’ in their concerts. This would escalate the competition amongst the band members in ‘who is louder, who stands out the most’.

In my opinion, their first proper hard rock song is 'Heaven and Hell' which was written and sung by the bassist John Entwistle, which made itsdebuted in 1968.
