前回に引き続きザ・クラッシュの足跡を辿りました。今回は南ロンドン。
Continued from the last time, I followed the footsteps of The Clash, this time in South London.
ウエストエンド方面からヴォクスホール橋を渡って南下。

デヴィッド・ボウイの生まれた家。
慎ましい労働者階級の家々が並ぶ通りといった印象。
またブリクストンはザ・クラッシュのベーシスト、ポール・シムノンとリード・ギタリストのミック・ジョーンズが幼少期を過ごした場所でもある。
古くからカリブ系の住民が多く、シムノンの、ひいてはザ・クラッシュの音楽性に多大な影響を与えた。
彼が作詞作曲しボーカルを取る「The Guns of Brixton」というレゲエ・ロック調の曲はその代表例。
ジョーンズも自身がボーカルを取る「Stay Free」の中でブリクストンでの少年時代について歌っている。
この後この曲に歌われているもうひとつの実在の場所を訪ねた。

ちなみに
ブリクストンはまたシャーロック・ホームズの記念すべき第一作「緋色の研究」の事件が幕を開けた土地でもある。
Brixton Roadから脇に入った3 Lauriston Gardensにある家が殺人事件の現場だった。
実際にはこれは架空の住所で、作者コナン・ドイルの出身地エジンバラに同地名が存在することから作者がこれを借用したものと考えられる。
いち「シャーロキアン」（ホームズ・ファン）としてそのゆかりの地巡りも近いうちにやってみたい。

The birthplace of David Bowie.
The neighborhood had the feel of a humble working class quarter.
Brixton was also a home to Paul Simonon, later to be the bassist of The Clash and the lead guitarist Mick Jones in their childhood.
The area historically is home to a large number of Caribbeans, who had a tremendous musical influence on Simonon, eventually to The Clash as a whole.
One of the band’s classics The Guns of Brixton was written and sung by Simonon.
Jones also sang about their youth in Brixton in Stay Free.
This song goes on about neighboring Streatham, to be continued in the next photo…
By the way,
The first ever Sherlock Holmes story Study in Scarlet was set in this place.
In this, a murder was commited at ‘3 Lauriston Gardens, off Brixton Road’.
I presume that Conan Doyle picked Lauriston Gardens which exists in real life in his hometown Edinburgh and used it.
As a keen Sherlockian, I would like to set about a ‘London Sherlock Holmes Site-seeing’ sometime soon.

「Crown & Sceptre」は
「Stay Free」の歌詞に登場するパブ。
創業1825年とも言われる老舗。
The Crown & Sceptre is a pub located at the intersection of Streatham Place and Streatham Hill.
This place is sung about in The Clash classic Stay Free.
It is said to date back to as early as 1825.
Wetherspoon sells historic Streatham pub to the disgust of its customers

シンシア・ペインが売春宿を営んでいた場所。
アイアン・メイデンの「22 Acacia Avenue」のモチーフになったということをどこかで読んだのだが、
アカシア・アベニューとはイギリスで最もありふれた通りの名前であり、ありふれた中産階級の暮らしを皮肉る表現とも言われるのでその信憑性は疑わしい。

There stood a den where Cynthia Payne ran her secret brothel.
I have read somewhere that ‘22 Acacia Avenue’ by Iron Maiden was based on this place.
However, ‘Acacia Avenue’ is apparently a cliche for an undescriptive, unexceptional British life, so that may be the story of it.

ワンズワース橋からワンズワース方面を望む。
リード・ギタリストのミック・ジョーンズは当地の出身。
ストラマーが剛ならジョーンズは柔。
前者は急進的な理想主義をギターを掻き鳴らしストレートなロックンロールに乗せて攻撃的に歌えば
後者は泣きのギターで懐古的、感傷的な歌を歌う。
そこにカリブ系のビートを持ち込んだシムノンが融合して独特の音楽が生まれた。
バンドは化学反応が生む偶然のアートでもある。

In The Clash, Strummer was the hard man, when Jones had a ‘soft spot’ for sentimentalism.
The former was an unbendable idealist warrior, the latter sang to emotional melodies his guitar produced.
Simonon added his Caribbean beat to the mix to create their unique music…
A perfect example of an art of chemistry.
