The Environment Agency issued a notification that, as of 13th of May 2020 angling is now officially allowed.
We are back on the banks!

...Fishing aside, I went foraging for the Elderflower.
Needless to say, the cordial made of the flora is one of Britain's favorite summer refreshments.
Wanting to make my own for some time, I was waiting for it to be in full bloom.
The flowering season has quite a small window between late May and early June.
The Elder Tree is a kind of weed which can be seen anywhere across the nation, not only in the countryside but in the middle of the capital too.
Contrary to general perception, wild edibles are everywere to be found, even along busiest streets of the metoropolis.
What is really difficult, is finding clean pallatable ones which have not been affected by polluted air or contaminated by stray animals. Naturally those found along busy roads must be excluded.

In order to avoid all the above, the harvest can only be found well inside of parks or forests and should be picked from hip level upwards, or in the middle of brambles or stinging nettles - reasonably unreachable by those beasts.
On top of that, trees facing a golf course or playground should be avoided, for they might be contaminated by pesticides.
The fact that the trees like to grow in sunny places makes it even harder to find clean edibles in London.

Taking these points into consideration, I picked Horsenden Hill to be my foraging ground.
On my way there, I cycled passed countless Elder trees in full bloom.
However, I could find very few trees that met the criteria in the wood.
It was like a tresure hunt in the refreshing air of the forest and field, which resulted in acquiring just enough of the flowerheads for my purpose.

I also found some Hogweed buds. I had tried its young shoots a few times before but I had never spotted nor eaten its infant flowers.

It was surprising to know that Elderflower is in fact in the same genus Sambucus as Niwatoko of Japan.
According to Wikipedia Niwatoko is called Japanese Elder in English.
I knew that it contains a small amount of a toxin so  consumption in a large portion should be avoided. I almost forgot that I had had a little of it as tempura, since it was pretty boring in taste.
If I have a chance to travel to Japan during its flowering season, I would like to try to make Japanese Elderflower cordial.

The harvest should be piled upright, as they were on the plant. This is to preserve the pollen in the flowers, which is the sole source of its taste and aroma.

Children's picturebooks, Western or Eastern, frequently provide us with fundamental questions about morality.
Amongst Japanese fairy tales, there are some stories we have personally decided undesirable to read to our child.
They include, 'The Crab and the Monkey ','Kachi-kachi Yama' ,'Momotaro'' and so on.

Since its creation, 'Momotaro' has hundreds of different versions. Depending on the era and author the details vary.
The edition we have at home is pretty extreme. It goes like this:

Momotaro, through a rumor, 'finds out' that there are 'evil' Oni monsters doing evil things to people.
He decides to go on a boat to their Oni Island, to 'correct' them. He does this with his grandad and nanny's full support.
On his way there, he is joined by some animals which form his militia for his campaign.
On arrival to Oni Island,  without any attempt at negotiation or declaration of war, they commence a suprise attack!
After a one-sided onslaught, they accept the Onis' surrender and looted all of their treasures which they bring back home. They spend their lives happily ever after with Nanny and Grandad.

Lessons to be learned from this fable (in my opinion):
・'Rumors' need not be verified, as long as you believe them to be true.
・It is justified to kill and loot from 'Monsters' just because they look or sound different.
・Once you decide the other side is ' the enemy', there is no room for conversation/negotiation.
・Total Machiavellianism:Absence of declaration of war, surprise attack, trespassing, invasion, and attacks to vulnerable parts(eye gouging by the pheasant)
・Might is right, history is written by the victors; losers are always in the wrong:
The militia are supposed to attack oni simply to 'correct' them, which 'accidentaly' results in the theft of their treasures. If you have to kill anyway, what is wrong with stealing at the same time?

...What morals, really, can one draw from this strange tale??...

...Especially as parents of a mixed race infant, nothing that Momotaro and his gang does can possibly be justified enough to be told to our son.

Envisioning him either being persecuted as Oni or excluding others as one depending on which side of whatever society he choses to live in is grotesque.

In the Japanese Tokusatsu TV series from the 60's, actor Dokumamushi Sandayu swears at and goes, all gun's blazing, at alien's after first glance, without any attempt of talk.
I love this kind of accidental joke which the creators clearly did not intend on.
However, I am hesitant to let my child watch these yet.

These stories are certainly entertaining for adults, and are interesting and an important subject in the fields of history, antholopology, psychology or sociology, although I am not so sure if they are good for such gullible infants to absorb.

On the other hand, as a liberalist in a liberalist society, I believe nothing should be censored.
It should merely be a matter of exercising individual (in this case us parents') freedom of choice, or of speech to discuss.

Anyway, it has triggered these thoughts about this famous 'fable'.

For reference:
・Criticism on conventional views on Momotaro by the twelve year old Yotsuba Kuramochi
"Momotaro: Sacred Warriors" Allegedly, the first Japanese made feature-length animation film from 1945. It was supported by the naval ministry of the Great Japanese Empire, under the supervision of the Imperial Headquarters. Momotaro demands a 'yes or no' answer to unconditional surrender to English speaking Caucasian generals. This is obviously an homage to the scene that was played in real life by General Tomoyuki Yamashita to the British counterpart General Percival at the time of the fall of then British controlled Singapole. Momotaro was used as perfect propaganda in Japansese militarism.
The film is currently on Youtube.

The British Government has announced a phased plan to ease lockdown;

  • Bringing back the workforce gradually, depending on the field.
  • Unlimited time allowed outside for exercise.
  • Continuous avoidance of public transport, commuting by walking, biking or driving are recommended.

this blog is not for polical argument.
