Once upon a time, over the mountains, there was a hidden village down by the valley...

When I visited there some ten years ago, it was already on the verge of dissolution.
Today, only two of the houses are still standing, both share a slight sign of human intervention, unlike the others.

As of 26th of March, out of four unpaved roads that lead to the settlement, only this route is available.

Gasa Gasa Gasa Gasa net fishing - a recently created Japanese word. The concept is simple, universal and it must have existed since the invention of the 'net'.
Lately, I got to know the method via some of my favourite fishing channels on the internet.

It is indeed very simple; put your waders on, go into the river, place a net on the riverbed close to the bank and give it a 'shake-shake' (or 'gasa-gasa' in Japanese). You can also use your foot to gasa-gasa the riverbank or stones on the bottom to get whatever creatures there to evacuate into the net.

Today I set out to try this for the first time in the stream where I caught Dark Chub a few days ago.
After playing with those fish with the conventional fishing method using a hook, line and rod, I went further downstream to have my first ever go at Gasa Gasa. Gasa Gasa.
My aim for this day were the Japanese Freshwater Crab and Freshwater Prawn.

The reward was surprisingly instantaneous.
Within a couple of minutes, the net was filled with not only fish but all sorts of different creatures, such as Dragonfly Larva, Mayfly Larva, Shellfish and so on.
I almost thought that this could be more exciting than fishing using a hook and line!

At the same time, I also turned stones in and by the stream for Crab and Prawn in vain.

Although my initial goal did not come to fruition, I was fully satisfied with the whole experience.
Another great day!

Over this valley, in the middle of the mountains, there was a 'hidden village' that consisted of merely three, four households. It might well be a ruin by now...
According to my dad, the settlement was built to accommodate (or rather, 'confine'...) Hansen's disease patients.
Those who unreasonably shamed and persecuted by an ignorant and exclusive society, whose memory will be completely erased from the surface of the earth, as well as the village itself...

The long-awaited Trout season began today here in my region.

Having hardly slept the night before due to excitement and expectations, I found myself initiating my first Char fishing session of 2019 at 'the darkest hour before the dawn' in good old 'Char Valley'.
When I started to get into Char fishing, I would 'commute' to this very stream every week.

After a couple of hours and an absence of any sign or reaction from fish, I was almost going to declare this a dead river.
Yet, persistence slowly started to pay off. I managed to get four char in total during this session, all of which I caught with live bait.

This time around I also tried lures but with no response at all.
It could be either because of a lack of skill on my part or the lack of energy of the fish due to low temperatures.
I look forward to giving lure and tenkara fishing a go for trout/char when it gets a little warmer.

KIMG1385

The weather today was absolutely gorgeous, with the temperature reaching a high of 13 degrees Celsius.

Of course, I set out to make the most of the day, on the swamp near my residence.
Two hours passed pretty uneventfully, which did not bother me at all, for I immersed myself in a humming-inducing, idyllic setting.
Then the floater started to bob up and down. The movement was not very quick, but pretty big and consistent. I snapped the tip of my rod... to get it hooked!
After 15 minutes of tug of war, I was successfully able to land My First Carp of 2019.

On my way back, I stopped by the source of the swamp, where it joins the river which is just 300 metres from my parents'.
After being taken advantage of and fooled by small fish, another Carp, even bigger and more powerful than the last took my bait!
As a result of 20 minutes or so of exchange, I once again could capture a beautiful golden beast at dusk.

There could not have been a better way to spend a lovely spring day than this.
WHAT A GREAT DAY!

It has been blizzarding as if the winter's been striking back here since yesterday. This is not good for fishing... so I decided to take a break from it and went for a leisurely walk along Omono river in hope of finding a potentially fruitful swim.

At the end of the day, I happened to have climbed two small mountains( or rather, hills).
It was nice that I was able to rediscover my love of hiking/mountaineering.

There is this lake in my hometown, which is within biking distance from my parents' where we children used to go and play. There was a cave in one of the streams which flowed into it. Kids would explore it, play around on the section of the brook and mess with the fishermen's traps set on the riverbed to catch the Freshwater Prawns.

As the water surface of the lake finally thawed out, out of nostalgia, I went to see the place. With the same kind of trap in tow, but of my own creation,  I placed it in the stretch where the cave had once been.
I also threw a rig with an earthworm and maggots into a point where those two streams meet the lake.

On the following day, I went there to find that the prawn trap was completely empty(´;ω;`)
then moved on to check another one in the confluence.
As I untied the knot of the line on the tree, I could feel something was on the other end of it. It felt quite feeble, so it was not until just before I landed it that I realized it was actually a fish...
which was to be My First Ever Herabuna or the Japanese White Crucian Carp.

Widely regarded as the original game fish of the nation, not so many people take it to eat.
I would.
Because I knew that the water is very clean there and coarse fish have the least unpleasant odour in their flesh in the winter, I had no excuse not to try my first Herabuna.
The fish made nice miso soup - very clean tasting but rich in delicious fat - with refreshingly scented chopped Bakke (a type of edible wild plant or sansai) that I had picked also on the spot.

どなたか詳しい方、ご指導下さい(^-^;

9/March/2019

It’s been forecasted that we are going to have a lovely, warm, sunny weekend here in my hometown in Tohoku, Japan. Needless to say, missing the opportunity to enjoy fishing in a beautiful setting which holds a very special place in my heart - the stream where my dad used to take my brother and me when we were kids - was not an option for me.

Contrary to my expectation, the unpaved road which leads to the spot was mostly clear of snow so I could drive right by the swim. I saw an old local mum and pop by the side of the road, whom I asked whether they knew if the spot I was going to remained the same as the old days. Pop told me that the stream was unchanged, but because of the recent rampage of invasive species(namely the Bluegill), native fishes have been severely marginalized. Feeling doomed, I got myself walking towards the swim.

Luckily, the familiar spot with a deep pool under a waterfall was not frozen. I started with some maggots then with caterpillars, but the offer was not reciprocated… After a while, I started to suspect that they could still have been "hibernating" under layers of dead leaves. Then I happened to spot a school of fish floating at the bottom of the deepest pit in the middle of the pool. I changed my bait to an earthworm and dropped it right above it. The float sunk immediately and the next moment I got Oikawa or the Pale Chub at the end of my line. The fish had a shiny silver body with a trace of metallic purple or blue, an absolute stunner. In the next 2 hours or so, I could get more than ten of them and two Minnow.

The swim back then as I remembered was only inhabited by the Minnow and Dace, but not the Pale Chub. However, looking back, I have very limited knowledge about fish species nor did I care then, so Oikawa could very well be there. If that’s not the case I would like to call those fish I caught today “My first ever Pale Chub”.

I took some of them with Bakke, one of my favourite sansei(edible wild plants) to my parents' for dinner. My mum cooked tempura with them.

When we catch, pick, cook and eat from Mother Nature... we feel so satisfied, so alive like no other. I guess no matter how much urbanised our lifestyle would be, the hunter-gatherer instinct would still remain some irresistible force in our brain.

P.S.

After learning more about Zacco and its related genus, I have come to suspect that most of the fish I caught on that day could well have been Kawamutsu or the Dark Chub, rather than the Pale Chub. It is in a genus that is closely related to Zacco, to which the Pale Chub belongs.

To make it more confusing, it is common that those species cross-breed with each other.

The natural habitat of the Dark Chub was originally confined to western Japan, but they have inadvertently expanded their territory when their fry(juvenile fish) accidentally got mixed in when authorities were stocking other fish. Now they can be found throughout the nation.

By the way, the Pale Chub themselves, also originally from western Japan, are invading species in Tohoku.
