We went on a five-day camping trip at a campsite by Llyn Tegid or Bala Lake, Snowdonia National Park, Wales.

The Wife bought our six-man tent recently, which she already tested on with the son on their trip on Jurassic Coast in Dorset last month.

Thus, she was already an expert camper and tent pitcher, so the rest of us just followed her lead.

It turned out to be an unexpectedly comfortable stay in the tent.

I feel like this is going to be the way we are spending our holiday in the warmer months!

Three and a half hour drive from our London home took us to the border of Snowdonia.

The mountains covered with purple carpets of flowering Heather were just breathtaking.

After pitching our tent, we drove around the huge Llyn Tegid aka Bala Lake.

The Sun was setting so we did not have much time, but we were able to find some good small beaches for us to be based on the following day.

IMG_20230816_201443_HDR

Our first dinghy ride on the following day turned out to be a bit of a disaster.

I had no idea how to maneuver it.

There was a quite strong continuous eastward flow of water in the lake, when the oars that are extra short did not help either.

I had my fishing rods on board, but angling was not even an option!

IMG_20230818_182718_MP

We had originally planned to stay at another campsite by the beach near the tip of Llyn Peninsula, when we had to make a change to it with a huge storm approaching, according to the weather forecast.

We booked a site a short drive away from where we stayed.

The following morning, we quickly packed up our tent before the rain started.

Then we drove there to have a look.

The site was spacious, clean and flat.

We slept better here!

IMG_20230818_153101_MP

The Wife spotted a Wild Strawberry on the side of the path.

We all got excited and looked under the bushes to find more of those 'low hanging fruits', that were hidden and hard to spot.

We could find 5,6 of them in the end.

While we were at it, an Eastern European lady who walked past told us that there had been many of them around there a few days before.

I spotted more patches, where I picked  one tenth of them.

The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast

https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9zaGVybG9ja3BvZGNhc3QubGlic3luLmNvbS9yc3M?ep=14

When I first found this podcast a few years ago, I had an automatic rejective reaction to their American accent.

'Why on earth are these Yankees messing with the Cannons?'

However, since I happened to revisit them recently,

they have been growing on me.

Their attention to detail, knowledge and in-depth interviews with the actors/actresses/the production teams and famous Sherlockians…

I now even feel that their American accent has given the show an observer-like property in a positive way.

Fishing trip to Isle of Portland, Dorset.

As is the problem at any car park in the English countryside, the one at the tip of the island accepted only coins, otherwise card payment on a phone app, where there is no reception.

In the end, I ended up driving around for about two hours to find a free parking space near a fishable swim.

I took four days off from work and went out to enjoy nature.

On the first day, I drove to Samphire Hoe near Dover to fish.

IMG_20230728_120551_HDR

There was a long queue of trucks from miles away from the harbour.

Luckily, another lane of the single carriage road was almost congestion free so I could reach the fishing tackle shop where I had ordered my live bait from in time.

Going through a tunnel through the famous white cliff, I reach my destination, Samphire Hoe.

I had to wait at the ticket gate for some 20 minutes for the clerk to come back to buy a fishing permit.

It was incredibly snaggy so I moved to the east end of the structure, where the bottom looked more sandy.

The whole afternoon went past without a single bite.

My bait almost ran out and I was close to packing my stuff up and leaving, when the tip of my rod tipped subtly but lively.

I snatched and reeled to find a nice fat Mackerel on the hook!

The fish and kombu made a very tasty broth!

The only thing was that the sand in the shelfish had not been fully removed properly…

Fishing and hiking in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

After picking up the live bait that I had ordered the previous day, I drove to Friston Forest as planned.

It turned out the car park was occupied by dozens of cars and families, which was enough to make me abandon my initial plans.

Subsequently I left the spot and drove 15 minutes or so to Abbot’s Wood.

Luckily, it was much quieter than the former, so I decided to hike there.

IMG_20230723_194300_HDR

Going down the steep steps and landing on the rocky strip.

It was on high tide so my swim, the shore beneath the cliffs was a mere 10 metres or so from the water.

It was incredibly snaggy with huge rocks with tons of floating seaweed.

I got my rigs stuck on my first go, even though

I was using the ‘rotten bottom’ system to prevent losses of rigs and fish.

Plus, the waves were pretty wild, so when the tip of my rod tipped violently the second time, I did not think it was a fish.

It continued to swing wildly for a while, when I finally snatched it and started to reel in.

It was a Seabass, covered in heavy seaweed!

Unfortunately, just before landing, it got off the hook and ran away.

Damn!

IMG_20230723_160001_HDR

I quickly got rid of the weed on the line and put bait of ragworms on the rig and casted on the same spot again.

Shortly after, I got the same reaction.

This time I wasted no time.

The fish put up a few minutes of good fight with waves and weed on his side before I managed to secure my dinner!

As planned, I headed to the East Pier of Newhaven Harbour, hoping to catch some Mackerel.

I parked my car at a dilapidated industrial area and thrusted my way in the rampage of Stinging Nettle and Bramble bushes that were almost concealing the paths.

It ended abruptly at a gate to an industrial estate, where I was refused entry earlier.

I went back to the car and drove to the car park by the West Beach, where I had fished in vain about a month ago.

The last time I was there, none of the fishermen looked successful.

This time around, the Mackerel anglers next to me was complaining how fruitless it had been recently.

listening to this discouraging anecdote, I decided not to bother setting up my Mackerel rigs.

Not to my surprise, the session turned out unsuccessful, as did my neighbors'.

Saturday 8 July 2023,

I went to see Iron Maiden at O₂ Arena after work.

I saw them last year in Belfast, Northern Ireland, when I promised myself to go see them the following year.

It was a wonderful show in many ways;

Steve Harris's fingers of God on the bass was divine as ever;

the three lead guitarists' exceptional professionalism was strong as usual;

no sign of decline on the mighty vocals of Bruce Dickenson;

71 year old Nico McBrain drumming was even better than in Belfast!

Is there such a word as slowing down in his dictionary?

The selection of songs were personally special to me-

Most of the tunes were either from their new album' Senjutsu' and the 1986 masterpiece 'Somewhere In Time'.

I was impressed that they chose their lesser known or new, long progressive rock style tunes, rather than popular songs to please the masses.

What was most insane was that the majority of the full capacity crowd there knew and was singing along to all of the songs they played!

Maybe they had done the same thing as I did-I had checked their setlist at their previous show in Manchester, so I knew almost exactly how it would go.

Thanks to the preparation, I could time when to go to the toilet and when to leave without being stuck in a crowd to take the tube back home.

It was a perfect night from the start to finish.

I shall come back to their next tour!

Oh well, wherever,

wherever you are

Iron Maiden's gonna get you

No matter how far!

Fishing session off Magazine Lane, Southampton.

The water the city faces is called Southampton Water, and it is technically the River Test estuary.

On low tides, tons of weed or debris of something seem to be washed out towards the sea…

I drove a hundred plus miles from home to River Severn at Warwickshire/Gloucestershire, in my quest of the magnificent Zander.

In short, I was not even able to get one bite.

All I saw was a plain grey/silverish silhouette chasing my lure then turning away just a few feet away in the twilight.

It was not a Pike or Perch for sure…

I believe it was a 'Zed'.

As night falls, I packed up my tackle and hit the road home.

I shall dream on, and return.

P.S.

I have lived in this country for a total of close to ten years at this point, but still have no idea how those English place names should be pronounced…

'River Severn' is apparently pronounced exactly the same as the number 7.

Can you guess these?

On the evening of Wednesday 7 June,

I went to O₂ Arena to see Roger Waters with the Wife.

It was our first time to have seen any of the Pink Floyds live.

The quality of their play and the sound were absolutely masterful.

However, the propaganda was just too much…

could we just forget about the politics and enjoy the great classics?

Arrived at the car park by the beach around 8am.

Both sides of Rock-a-Nore Road stretching eastward from the Old Town which leads to the car park are full of fishmongers, seafood restaurants and fisherman's huts.

A fisherman turned up with a crate full of the remains of Dogfish or Huss to be discarded on the beach.

A huge flock of seagulls sensed it coming and swarmed at it subsequently.

Having spent 5 years or so in rural fishing/farming towns in Hokkaido, Japan, the Wife knows that this is a typical practice by fishermen.

She thinks this is to protect their commodities from those predators to prey on.

It is a very common food in Japan, but in this country, it has been deemed as carcinogenic and inedible.

I am neither sure if the cooking methods in Japan can remove all the carcinogens safely nor if it is the same species as the British cousin.

Either way it is better to leave it when you are not 100 percent sure!

On the last day of our holiday, I went solo hiking on the fields in south London.

I was hoping to encounter the yet to be seen St. George's Mushroom, whose main habitats are grasslands.

The field was filled with people but I managed to enjoy my spiritually fulfilling solitary walk listening to a wonderful audiobook.

In the end, I could not find the fungus I was after-

I am going to be on a mission in search of the species for the next three weeks.

Our entire Easter holiday was spent almost solely on the search for and purchase of the right car.

After running around the great city while taming and bribing our wild child for a week, dodging all the crooked conmen secondhand car dealers, we finally found the right vehicle at an official dealership.

The days of carrying tons of luggage with an untamed animal have hopefully come to an end!

And it will enable me to explore previously unreachable by public transport!

It will be ready for collection by the weekend.

After signing the deal, we walked to a nearby wood/hill just behind the premises, light on our toes.

Try(full album)/Black Sabbath

For the last few weeks, I have been revisiting this album and rediscovered the great of then vocalist Tony Martin and his era with the band.

In between Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio, two of the most iconic heavy metal singers, he has been underrated and ignored unfairly.

I bought the CD of this album in 1990 on its release and thought it to be one of the masterpieces of the genre.

On my first listen after all these years, my appreciation of it has been proven to be unchanged, if not strengthened.

Other albums such as Eternal Idol and Headless Cross are also great, but this is the cream of Tony Martin era Sabbath, in my opinion.

It MUST be remastered and reissued!

BGM/Playlist

Try(full album)/Black Sabbath

75pecent off! at the Waitrose fish counter.

Guess it was because it was Monday, the day before the Billingsgate Fish Market(the wholesale market) opens for the week, and they have to get rid of older stock to accommodate new catches for Good Friday.

The Wife got excited and bought this much:

Monkfish, Halibut, Seabass, Sea Bream, and breaded Cod fingers.

The lady and her kid in front of us were also excited and bought a lot.

The Wife overheard that the mum was saying the Halibut would be great to be cooked with chorizo…

We looked it up later and turned out to be a Mediterranean recipe.

We would definitely like to try it!

Holiday under the beautiful cloudless blue sky after  weeks of terrible weather.

I went to see(to smell…) the rare Sweet Violet at a secret spot in the green space in my neighbourhood with the Wife.

It's Summer time-

The clock went one hour forward here in the UK last Sunday.

It could be because of that, or a general monday morning blues, my son was very moody and refused to leave for nursery.

It took us some time and effort to have him come out of it.

After completing my paternal duties,

I headed for a forest in the outskirts of Greater London.

Forest walks always work the magic-

Summertime blues was completely gone and I felt like a new man there!

I cooked and TRIED eating the Oyster Mushroom I had picked the other day, to my disappointment.

IMG_20230320_144929_HDR

I found a Birch tree infested with Oyster.
However,
they were only bordering edible…
Anyhow, I picked a few better ones.

IMG_20230320_205234_HDR

The bigger tuft on the left turned out to be awfully maggot-ridden so it was swiftly moved into the bin.

I pan-fried the rest with butter and garlic…

IMG_20230321_211510_HDR

It was tough in texture, acrid and stale in taste…

Not worth risking an upset stomach for.

The fish was bought from the local fishmonger that I had always wanted to try.

They had a good selection of fish, some of which were even sashimi grade, such as fresh Tuna and frozen Hamachi!

Only (and the critical) issue is the prices…

This farmed whole Sea Bream was blinking 14 pounds!

Anyhow, the salt grilled fish in foil which I cooked was amazing.

As a Japanese person, when I have a high quality ingredient I would like to prepare/cook it the simplest way possible to appreciate the taste in its own right.

Thus, I would almost always prefer Shioyaki(salt grilled) or sashimi for a nicer fish.

IMG_20230322_204226_HDR

We started fasting again, this time for once a week inspired by a Stoicism teaching.

I used to do it on and off before, as well as in those days when I was forced to fast before every MMA competition.

However, the routine had been long lost.

Now in my middle age, my appetite was not as grand as it used to be.

It was an easy introduction and I am enjoying it as it feels refreshing and the food tastes much better after fasting.

I made Saikyou miso yaki with the rest of the Sea Bream filets.

It was another delicious success-

could not have been any better ways to break my fast!

IMG_20230322_205023_HDR

Arajiru, or miso soup with fresh fish stock.

This was probably the tastiest miso soup I had ever had in London.

I washed, boiled and rinsed the head, spin and other remains of the Sea Bream that I took filets of before cooking them in miso soup.

This process is essential for these types of fish which have strong unpleasant fishiness.

The umami and tasty fat are plenty so they will retain after this process.

Generous amount of ginger slices are also important to neutralize the fishiness.

The result was heavenly-

I sometimes have a suspicion that I have a hidden genius of some kind🤔

Hiking in Hainault Forest, Essex.

It has a good and easy access from my place,

since it is on the Central Line.

Recently I was reluctant to go outdoors, because I have gotten bored and fed up with hiking/mushroom hunting for a long distance in the foul cold, which more often than not ends up in coming home empty-handed.

That changed when I had a listen to the episode of one of my favourite podcast shows, where a philosopher of Stoicism and evolutionary biologist Massimo Pigliucci, introduced me to the worldview of Stoicism.

I started to listen to a course by him entitled 'Think Like a Stoic' on Wondrium on my way to/from work.

Then it sprang in my head that there could not be anything more ideal than learning it while rambling around in the forest, since connecting with Nature is one of the important teachings of Stoicism

It has constantly surprised me how it overlaps with some principles of Buddhist philosophy, methods of Vipassana meditation, and ancient Japanese wisdom, so that many of the teachings sound quite natural to me.

Now I find even seemingly boring winter walks amazing!

In Japan, one frequently encounters such trails named 'Path of Philosophy'.

I used to think they were very corny and cringey before every time I saw them until now I see them in a different light…

IMG_20230305_210750_HDR

PS; I went with my family to the Oyster bar where the only alcoholic drinks they serve are English sparkling wine.

The wine and oysters were good on their own, but certainly the worst combination to each other.

The acidity of the wine intensified the fishiness of the selfish when the flavor of the latter made the former tasted astringent and bitter and caused an unpleasant sensation to our disappointment.

A few days later, I bought oysters to enjoy with some sake.

The comic book Oishimbo was absolutely right on that…

As it says, sake and oyster complimented each other by 10 folds!

I was the only person in our family to have got in a physical shop of Amazon Fresh ever.

Just like a train station, one flashes the barcode on the Amazon app on the phone to let oneself in.

God knows how they do it they have no register nor payment on the spot is needed-all one has to do is to take anything, put it in a bag and leave.

Bit spooky though!

Chicken thigh roasted with anchovy fillets which my wife cooked, served again, with anchovy flavoured gravy.

However, it totally surpassed my expectations.

Friday the 27th January at the 100 Club, London

I went to see Dr. Feelgood with my wife, which was the first concert of the year for us.

The main figures of the Pub Rock genre from the early 70's was the precursor

of the punk rock movement.

Although the current line-up has none of the founding members or even players from their prime in the 70's, I thought it would be at least an enjoyable blues rock gig to treat us with.

It turned out to be a lot of fun and surely surpassed our expectations!

I am a huge fan of the late original guitarist Wilko Johnson's choppy strumming style.

He was the main influence on again late Japanese guitarist Hutoshi Abe, also of whom I am fan.

However, the current guitarist was the star of that night-

super technical and emotional, more like in Stevie Ray Voughan style playing to Johnson's code.

It just made us dance involuntarily!

PS;

Speaking of rock,

Japanese rock legend Tomoyasu Hotei and his wife Miki Imai visited my workplace two Saturdays ago.

It was a shame that I was too upset about something else to talk to them at all.

Looking back, he had already visited us a few times but I did not notice until then.

Hope I will have a chance to pay homage to him next time!

David Guilmour of Pink Floyd is also our customer.

I have not seen him yet but if I did, I would be totally starstruck.
